Mindblown: a blog about philosophy.

  • Ocular refraction

Refraction of the eye referred to the principal point of the eye and (theoretically) corrected by a lens placed at the eye’s principal plane.

  • Negacoll

A material used for making an impression of the eye, in the fitting of scleral contact lenses.

  • Molded scleral lens

A scleral contact lens which is fitted by the process of taking an impression of the eye and making a mold.

  • Microspherometer

An instrument used for measuring the radii of curvature of a contact lens.

  • Micro-lens

In its original form, a plastic corneal contact lens of unicurve construction averaging about 9.5 mm. in diameter and fitted somewhat flatter than the optic cap of the cornea.

  • Methyl methacrylate

A plastic material which is in general use in the fabrication of contact lenses. A polymer, made from methacrylic acid, used as a bone cement, bonding agent, drug-delivery vehicle, and tissue adhesive. Its operative use is sometimes associated with hypotension, fat or air embolism, or other complications.

  • Methods of illumination

Methods used in connection with the slit lamp biomicroscope for illuminating and viewing various ocular structures.

  • Measuring magnifier

A magnifier having a scale calibrated in 0.1 mm. steps. which can be used for measuring widths of optical zones, bevels, secondary curves, and overall diameters of contact lenses.

  • Magnification, spectacle

The ratio between the size of the retinal image of an ametropic eye before and after correction.

  • Magnification, relative spectacle

The ratio of the size of the retinal image in a corrected amctropic eye to that in the posterior focal plane of the same eye uncorrected.
