  • Antihypertensive drugs

Drugs that serve to maintain normal blood pressure. They can block the receptors for the vasoconstrictor hormones, promote water loss by decreasing the renal water reabsorption process, inhibit the activity of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), or interfere with the calcium ion second messenger systems. A group of drugs used to treat high blood pressure…

  • Anticoding strand

A strand of DNA that is used as a template to direct the synthesis of RNA that is complementary to it.

  • Anticholinergic compounds

The drug atropine sulfate (a belladonna alkaloid) acts as an anticholinergic compound and is used to control heart rhythm. It is also a vagolytic compound that is used preoperatively to diminish secretions and block vagal reflexes.

  • Anterior pituitary hormones

Hormones produced and released by the anterior pituitary. There are ten hormones released by the anterior portion of the pituitary gland located in the brain. These hormones are growth hormone (GH or somatotropin), prolactin (PRL), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH or thyrotropin), follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), ß-lipotropin, ß-endorphin,…

  • Antecedent events

Events that precede or are causally linked to an event.

  • Anorectin

A peptide that serves as a satiety signal.

  • Animal models for human disease

Numerous small animals have some characteristics in common with diseased humans. These can be used to study the disease process.

  • Atrial natruiretic hormone

The hormone that counteracts ADH. This hormone induces water, sodium, and potassium loss, decreases blood pressure, and increases glomerular filtration rate. ANH interferes with the renin- angiotensin system by decreasing the release of renin and aldosterone. It also antagonizes the action of vasoconstrictors such as angiotensin II and norepinephrine.

  • Aneurine

An old term for the vitamin thiamin.
