Bouchard’s nodes
Bony enlargements or nodules, located at the proximal interphalangeal joints, that result from osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. In osteoarthritis, bony enlargement of the proximal interphalangeal joints. In individuals with osteoarthritis, a condition affecting the joints, a bony protrusion known as a “swelling” can develop on the middle joint of the finger.

Wound botulism
Botulism acquired when spores of the bacteria contaminate an anaerobic wound, germinate, and produce the neurotoxin.

Intestinal botulism
Botulism caused by production of botulinum toxin in the colon following ingestion of spores of Clostridium botulinum. Most cases occur in infants.

Infant botulism
A form of botulism that affects infants less than 1 year old who ingest soil or food (esp. honey) containing Clostridium botulinum spores. The infant’s protective intestinal flora is not yet established, and the spores germinate into active bacteria that produce the neurotoxin. It is treated with oral amoxicillin.

Botulinic acid
A toxin found in putrid sausage.

Botulin
The protein neurotoxin that causes the clinical disease botulism. It may be used to efface skin wrinkles, and to treat neurological conditions such as torticollis.

Botryomycosis
A boil or furuncle, resembling an actinomycotic mass, but composed instead of bacteria, specifically Staphylococcus aureus.

Boswellia
A genus of trees found in the Middle East and India. The trees produce an oleoresin used in ayurvedic medicine as anti-inflammatory treatment for arthritis and asthma.

Boston naming test
A neuropsychiatric test to measure aphasia and naming ability. In the test the subject must name 60 line drawings of common and rarely seen objects. It is frequently used to assess patients with autism, brain injuries, or strokes.
