  • Cardiovascular collapse

    Sudden loss of blood flow to the brain and other organs, causing altered mental status and hypotension. This may be caused by conditions such as anaphylaxis, cardiogenic shock, vasovagal syncope, or postural hypotension.

    An instrument for excising part of a valve, especially the mitral valve.  

  • Cardiothyrotoxicosis

    Heart disease due to hyperthyroidism.  

  • Cardiothoracic ratio

    The relation of the overall diameter of the heart to the widest part of the inside of the thoracic cavity. Usually the heart’s diameter is half or less than half that of the thoracic cavity.

    The treatment of cardiac diseases.  

  • Cardiotachometer

    An instrument for measuring the heart rate over a long period.  

  • Cardioselectivity

    A stronger action on receptors in the heart than on those in the lungs; said of beta-adrenergic blocking agents that selectively block beta-1 receptors and thus do not cause bronchospasm.  

  • Cardiosclerosis

    Hardening of the cardiac tissues and arteries. The stiffening of the heart muscle caused by the accumulation of fibrous tissue.  

  • Cardiopneumograph

    A device for recording the motion of the heart and lungs.
