  • Cuneiform cartilage

One of two small pieces of elastic cartilage that lie in the aryepiglottic fold of the larynx immediately anterior to the arytenoid cartilage.

  • Alar cartilage

Cartilage forming the broad lateral wall of each nostril.

  • Carry-over

The portion of analyte brought from one reaction segment to the next. The accuracy of laboratory test results may be altered by contaminants that are transferred from one reaction to the following one.

  • Carrier-free

Not attached to a carrier; said of radioactive isotopes.

  • Intermittent carrier

One who harbors an infectious organism (e.g., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the nasal passages) from time to time, but not continuously.

  • Incubatory carrier

One who harbors and spreads an infectious organism during the incubation period of a disease before it becomes clinically evident.

  • Genetic carrier

One whose chromosomes contain a pathological gene that may be transmitted to offspring. In some cases (e.g., Tay-Sachs disease) this condition can be detected prenatally by a laboratory test done on amniotic fluid.

  • Active carrier

One who harbors a pathogenic organism for a clinically significant time and is able to pass the infection to others.

  • Carriage

The harboring, holding, or transporting of a chemical, gene, infection, or other material.

  • Carphologia

Involuntary picking at bedclothes, seen especially in febrile delirium.
