  • Mastoid cell

    An old term for one of the mastoid sinuses of the temporal bone.  

  • Lutein cell

    A cell of the corpus luteum of the ovary that contains fatty yellowish granules. Granulose lutein cells are hypertrophied follicle cells; these lutein (paralutein) cells develop from the theca interna.  

  • Littoral cell

    A macrophage found in the sinuses of lymphatic tissue.  

  • Lactotrope cell

    A cell in the anterior pituitary that produces the hormone prolactin.  

  • Labile cell

    A cell that is always mitotically active, such as the epithelial cells lining the stomach and the stem cells in the red bone marrow.  

  • Juxtaglomerular cell

    A modified smooth muscle cell in the wall of the afferent arteriole leading to a glomerulus of the kidney. This type of cell secretes renin when blood pressure decreases to activate the renin-angiotensin mechanism, which elevates blood pressure and increases sodium retention.  

  • Juvenile cell

    The early developmental form of a white blood cell.  

  • Islet cell

    A cell of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas.  

  • Intestinal absorptive cell

    In the small intestine, any of the tall columnar cells topped with a brush border made of thousands of microvilli.  

  • Hyperchromatic cell

    All or part of a cell that contains more than the normal number of chromosomes and hence stains more densely.
