  • Acoustic trauma deafness

    Impaired hearing due to repeated exposure to loud noise.  

  • Deaf-mutism

    The state of being both deaf and unable to speak.  

  • Deaf-mute

    A person who is unable to hear or speak. An individual who cannot hear or speak, particularly when the speech impairment is a result of being born deaf or becoming deaf shortly after birth.  

  • Deafferentation

    Cutting off of the afferent nerve supply.  

  • Dead tooth

    A nonvital tooth by clinical standards, having had the pulp removed by endodontic treatment. The term is a poor choice because, if the periodontal tissues are healthy, the tooth will continue to function without symptoms.  

  • Physiological dead

    The sum of anatomical and alveolar dead space.  

  • Mechanical dead

    The volume of gas exhaled into a tubing system and rebreathed on the subsequent breath.  

  • Anatomical dead

    In pulmonary physiology, the air in the mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchial tree at the end of inhalation. This is termed dead space because the air does not reach the alveoli and is not involved in gas exchange.  

  • Alveolar dead

    The volume of gas in alveoli that are ventilated but not perfused, or ventilated but not fully perfused.  

  • Deactivation

    The process of becoming or making inactive.
