  • Deceleration injury

    An injury in which a moving body hits a stationary object, for example, when a falling patient lands on the ground.  

  • Deceleration

    A rapid decrease in velocity. A decline in the fetal heart rate, serving as a potential indication of insufficient blood circulation through the placenta.  

  • Decantation

    Gentle pouring off a liquid so the sediment remains. Separation of the head from the body; beheading.  

  • Decant

    To pour off liquid so the sediment remains in the bottom of the container. To decant, such as the process of dispensing wine from a bottle. Draining the liquid from a mixture while leaving the solid residue behind.  

  • Decameter

    A measure of 10 m; 393.71 in.  

  • Decaliter

    A measure of 10 L, equivalent to 10,000 ml, or about 10.57 qt.  

  • Decalcify

    To soften bone through removal of calcium or its salts by acids.  

  • Debulking

    Surgery to remove a large portion of a tumor when complete excision is not possible. The surgical extraction of a portion of a cancerous tumor that cannot be entirely eliminated, performed with the objective of enhancing the efficacy of radiation therapy or chemotherapy.  

  • Debrief

    To discuss events, thoughts, and feelings experienced by individuals who have been involved in an important or stressful encounter.  

  • Mechanical debridement

    The removal of necrotic or devitalized tissue from a wound using friction, hydrotherapy, scraping, or wet-to-dry dressings.
