  • Holandric

    Transmitted only by a gene in the nonhomologous portion of the Y chromosome.  

  • Hofbauer cell

    A macrophage found in the connective tissue of the chorionic villi.  

  • Hodge’s plane

    A plane running parallel to the pelvic inlet and passing through the second sacral vertebra and the upper border of the os pubis.  

  • Hochsinger’s sign

    Closure of the fist in tetany when the inner side of the biceps muscle is pressed.  

  • Hitting bottom

    A colloquial term for reaching the lowest limits of depression or depravity. The term is often used by addicts in support groups to describe the depths to which their addiction has taken them.  

  • Hitchhiker’s thumb

    A hyperextended thumb or the ability to extend the distal interphalangeal joint of the thumb more than 45 degrees. It is an autosomally inherited trait.  

  • Histozyme

    A renal enzyme that converts hippuric acid into benzoic acid and glycine, causing fermentation.  

  • Histozoic

    Living within or on tissues, said of certain protozoan parasites.  

  • Histotropic

    Having attraction for tissue cells, as certain parasites, stains, or chemicals.  

  • Histo spots

    Scarring of the macula found in patients infected with Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungus that is endemic in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys.
