  • Adrenomedullary hormone

    Any of several hormones (e.g., epinephrine and norepinephrin) produced by the adrenal medulla.  

  • Adrenocortical hormone

    A hormone (e.g., aldosterone or cortisol) that is secreted by the cortex of the adrenal gland.  

  • Hormesis

    The stimulating effect of a low dose of a substance that is toxic in higher doses.  

  • Hopelessness

    Despair; loss of faith in the possibility of a positive outcome. Loss of trust in one’s prospects may give rise to depression, desperation, or antisocial behaviors.  

  • Reading for enhanced hope

    A pattern of expectations and desires that is sufficient for mobilizing energy on one’s own behalf and can be strengthened.  

  • Hooke’s law

    The stress used to stretch or compress a body is proportional to the strain as long as the elastic limits of the body have not been exceeded.  

  • Hoodia gordonii

    A cactuslike herb promoted as a dietary supplement for weight loss. There is no evidence that the herb is effective, and its potentially toxic effects on the liver make it an unwise choice for dieters.  

  • Honorific

    To convey honor upon a person, especially while writing or speaking about an individual.  

  • Honeymoon

    A disease remission, used especially to describe the brief period after the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus during which no insulin therapy is required.  

  • Homozygosis

    The formation of a zygote by the union of gametes that have one or more identical alleles.
