Osmotic diuresis

Elevated frequency of urination resulting from the presence of sugar or other substances in the urine.

The kidneys produce a greater volume of urine due to the existence of certain substances in the urine that attract water from the blood into the urine. This effect can be brought about by elevated levels of glucose in the urine, often seen in diabetes mellitus. Another potential cause is the use of osmotic diuretic medications like mannitol.
