Odds ratio

In epidemiology, a technique for estimating relative risk from case-control studies relative odds.

A good approximation of the relative risk. It compares the ratio of exposed/unexposed individuals among the diseased with the ratio of exposed/unexposed individuals among the controls. The odds ratio is a measure that is used in case-control studies, where cases and controls are selected at the same time.

In epidemiological case-control studies, a relative measure of disease occurrence. The odds in favor of a particular disease occurring in an exposed group are divided by the odds in favor of its occurring in an unexposed group. If the condition being studied is rare, the odds ratio is a close approximation to the relative risk.
