Occult

A philosophy of hidden matters that includes practices based on those theories and beliefs that are beyond human understanding.

Not easy to see with the naked eye.

Referring to a symptom or sign which is hidden.

Hidden, difficult to observe (e.g., occult fracture, one that is at first not observable on an X ray).

Hidden, not observable by the naked eye; often used in reference to bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

A term meaning hidden or obscure. For example, an occult blood test is a chemical test performed to detect the presence of blood in the feces that is not visible to the naked eye.

Not apparent to the naked eye; not easily determined or detected. For example occult Wood is blood present in such small quantities, for example in the feces, that it can only be detected microscopically or by chemical testing.

Something that is not easily seen. For example, occult blood in the faeces (which may be a pointer to disease of the colon and rectum) is present in such small amounts that it can be identified only by a chemical test or under the microscope.

Obscure; not easily understood; mysterious; concealed, as a hemorrhage.

Concealed or not easily noticed. For instance, the term “occult blood” is frequently employed to characterize blood present in a stool sample that is not visibly discernible but can be identified through chemical testing.
