Largest of the several UFO organizations to survive into the 1990s. The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) was founded in 1969 as the Midwest UFO Network. The name was later changed to reflect its growth into an international organization. MUFON holds an annual symposium that provides the largest regular gathering of ufologists and their supporters, and its program has become a good indication of the shifting emphases in research and debate over UFOs. Though MUFON has endorsed the extraterrestrial hypothesis of UFO origins, a range of opinions, including skeptical ones, is expressed in its program. The lectures are published as the annual Mutual UFO Symposium Proceedings. MUFON also publishes a Manual for its held investigators that attempts to bring some order to the chaos of UFO reports received on a regular basis. Its MUFON UFO Journal (formerly Skyhook) is the largest circulating journal in the held.
