The subject matter pertains to a mycelial microfungus or a conspicuous proliferation of such a fungus. The causative agents of blue and green moulds are Penicillium spp. and grey mould is instigated by Botrytis cinerea. The origin of sooty mould is attributed to one of the Capnodiaceae, although the term has been inaccurately employed for the growth of Cladosporium spp. and other fungi on foliage and other such surfaces.
