Mosquito

An insect which sucks human blood, some species of which can pass viruses or parasites into the bloodstream.


A small winged bloodsucking insect belonging to a large group, the Diptera (two-winged flies). Its mouthparts are formed into a long proboscis for piercing the skin and sucking blood. Female mosquitoes transmit the parasites responsible for several major infectious diseases, including malaria.


A bloodsucking insect belonging to the order Diptera, family Culicidae. Important genera are Anopheles, Culex, Aedes, Haemagogus, Mansonia, and Psorophora. They are vectors of many diseases, including malaria, filariasis, yellow fever, dengue, viral encephalitis, and dermatobiasis. Illnesses carried by mosquitoes cause millions of deaths annually, especially in underdeveloped countries.
