Morning-after pill

A contraceptive pill taken after intercourse.

A series of hormonal pills that a woman can take to prevent pregnancy for up to 72 hours after having had unprotected sex or having been the victim of sexual assault. Hormones in the pills inhibit the development of a fertilized egg in the uterus. Taking a morning-after pill does not guarantee that a woman will not become pregnant but significantly reduces the risk.

A pill containing estrogen, progesterone, or both that must be taken within 72 hr after intercourse to prevent pregnancy.
