Malassezia

A fungal genus (previously known as Pityrosporum) classified as yeasts, naturally found on the skin surfaces of many animals including humans. It can cause hypopigmentation on the chest or back if it becomes an opportunistic infection.


A genus of fungi producing superficial infections of the skin. The species M. furfur is the causative organism of a form of ringworm.


A genus of fungi that is a common cause of superficial skin infections. The organisms are lipophilic. In hospitals, malassezian infections tend to occur in patients receiving lipid infusions. Malassezian infections of the bloodstream result in sepsis.


Naturally occurring fungus that is present on all human skin, but is responsible for dandruff when it grows out of control.
