Locus of control

Determines where a person perceives he or she receives personal power.


The degree to which a person views outcomes as happening because of his or her own ability or because of chance, fate, or other.


A term used in reference to an individual’s sense of mastery or control over events. Persons with an internal locus of control are more apt to believe that they can influence events, whereas those with an external locus of control tend to believe that events are dictated by fate. These respective orientations can influence a person’s practice of health-related behaviors.


An individual’s belief about how much power he or she has in regard to what happens to him or her.


The figurative place where a person locates the source of responsibility for the events in his or her life.


General expectancies about the connections between one’s actions and the outcomes and reinforcements that follow them.
