In dsm-iv-tr, this is a major group of infancy, childhood, and adolescence disorders that includes reading disorder, mathematics disorder, and disorder of written expression. Formerly known as academic skills disorders.
One of a variety of disorders characterized by difficulty reading, writing, or using mathematical symbols that is two standard deviations below the norm for one’s age and otherwise normal intelligence. The condition may become apparent at an early age but usually is not recognized until the child begins formal education in school. The frequency of this condition in boys is five times that in girls. About 5% of children in school use special educational services because of learning disorders.
Educational challenges encountered by individuals with average to above-average intelligence, impacting their abilities in reading, writing, and/or mathematics, and posing significant hindrance to academic accomplishments and daily functioning.
