Layer cake is a butter cake that is typically baked in two, three, or more separate pans. Once baked and cooled, the individual layers are stacked together with a filling of jam, cream, butter cream frosting, or other fillings in between each layer. The entire cake or just the top layer can then be frosted to complete the dessert.
