Wound in which the skin is opened or cut. Lacerations usually bleed heavily, and deep cuts can bleed severely. Cuts that are less than ¼ inch deep and ½ inch long, with smooth edges not over any joint, can usually be treated at home without stitches by cleaning the wound thoroughly, applying antibiotic ointment, closing the wound with butterfly bandages, and applying a sterile dressing.
