Isoleucine (ile)

An essential amino acid, rarely limiting in food; one of the branched-chain amino acids.


A monocarboxylic amino acid occurring in most dietary proteins.


An essential amino acid; it can prevent the accumulation of tissue triglycerides in diet-induced obese mice. It can also upregulate the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)a and uncoupling protein (UCP) in these mice.

Isoleucine is a branched-chain, essential amino acid. It is needed for synthesis of proteins and can be used for energy production within the muscle cell as well. Metabolism of isoleucine in the muscle results in the production of acetyl CoA and propionyl CoA. The acetyl CoA can be further metabolized for energy production via Krebs cycle. Additionally, within just a few biochemical steps, the propionyl CoA can be converted to succinyl CoA, which is an intermediate of Krebs cycle.


One of the essential amino acids, which are fundamental components of all proteins. It cannot be synthesized by the body and so must be obtained from the diet.
