An impulse-control disorder consisting of aggressive outbursts (e.g., assaultiveness or destruction of property) that are out of proportion to any evident stressors. Often the behavior is completely uncharacteristic of the person, who does not show this behavior between episodes. In many cases, however, this aggressiveness is expressed in less explosive ways between episodes.
A personality disorder marked by episodes of impulsive aggressiveness disproportionate to precipitating events. In contrast to amok, a culture-specific, onetime outburst, intermittent explosive disorder is a pattern of behavior. It may result in serious assaults or destruction of property.
