Interactive

Requiring or allowing a response from the user. In computer and telecommunications usage, interactive refers to a program that assumes the user or viewer will exercise some degree of choice to determine how the program will proceed. Almost all computer programs are interactive in that they present some kind of menu to the user, and then simply wait for the user’s input. Almost all television programs now are not interactive, in that they are simply broadcast at a certain time, and the viewer either watches them or not. An interactive television program, for instance, might allow the user to click either of two buttons during the presentation of a movie, one called “Happy Ending” and the other “Sad Ending”. You get to watch what you want to see, and the television company instantly knows not only who is watching their program, but what kind of ending they prefer. There are obviously many ramifications to interactive telecommunications that will need to be sorted out over time.
