Inguinal hernia

A henia into the inguinal canal of the groin.

A condition in which the inguinal canal has not closed completely after the testes have descended through it. Portions of intestine may enter the canal and the scrotum. Strenuous exercise may produce symptoms of pain is often treated surgically.

A hernia where the intestine bulges through the muscles in the groin.

Protrusion of abdominal structures or bowel in the groin region.

An extrusion of the abdominal peritoneum, sometimes containing a loop of bowel, through natural openings in the region of either groin.

The protrusion of a hernial sac containing intraperitoneal contents (e.g., intestine, omentum, or ovary) at the superficial inguinal ring. In an indirect inguinal hernia, the sac protrudes through the internal inguinal ring into the inguinal canal, often descending into the scrotum. In a direct inguinal hernia, the sac protrudes through the abdominal wall within Hesselbach’s triangle, a region bounded by the rectus abdominus muscle, inguinal ligament, and inferior epigastric vessels. A variety of indirect inguinal hernia is the sliding hernia, in which a portion of the wall of the protruding cecum or sigmoid colon is part of the sac, the remainder composed of parietal peritoneum. Femoral hernias occur where the femoral artery passes into the femoral canal. Indirect and direct inguinal hernias and femoral hernias are collectively referred to as groin hernias. Inguinal hernias account for about 80% of all hernias.

A condition that occurs when part of the intestine pushes into the scrotum.

A gap, vulnerability, or swelling in the lining of the abdominal wall situated in the groin region, accompanied by the protrusion of the large intestine, is commonly referred to as an inguinal hernia.

An inguinal hernia is a type of hernia where a portion of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall in the groin area. It can be classified as either direct or indirect. In a direct inguinal hernia, the intestine pushes through a localized weakness in the abdominal wall. On the other hand, in an indirect inguinal hernia, the intestine protrudes through the inguinal canal, which is the passage through which the testes descend into the scrotum in males. An indirect inguinal hernia can also occur in females.
