Hypocapnia

Deficiency of carbon dioxide in the blood.

A condition in which there is not enough carbon dioxide in the blood.

The presence in the blood of an abnormally low concentration of carbon dioxide.

A blood tension of carbon dioxide below normal. It is produced by hyperventilation which may be voluntary, mechanical (if the patient is on a ventilator), or in response to a physiological insult such as metabolic acidosis or brain injury.

A decreased amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. An excessively rapid rate of respiration (“hyperventilation”) is usually responsible.

Hypocapnia refers to a condition where the levels of carbon dioxide in the blood are unusually low. This can be caused by hyperventilation, which involves breathing that is either excessively deep or rapid. Symptoms of hypocapnia can include a sensation similar to pins and needles, as well as painful muscle cramps and spasms.
