Hypertonic

A solution more concentrated than the body fluids.

A solution with a higher osmotic pressure (greater solute concentration) than a standard solution, usually water or physiological saline, hypotonic.

Referring to a solution which has a higher osmotic pressure than another specified solution.

Referring to a muscle which is under unusually high tension.

Hypertonic refers to greater than normal pressure. A hypertonic solution exerts more osmotic pressure than plasma. Hypertonic solutions ingested orally may promote the movement of water from the plasma to the gut, which can produce symptoms of gastrointestinal distress including nausea, cramping, and diarrhea.

Having a higher osmotic pressure than a comparison solution. In reference to muscle tone, having greater than normal tension or relaxation.

Describing a solution that has a greater osmotic pressure than another solution.

To a solution of higher osmotic pressure than another.
