A surgical operation to remove a hernia and repair the organ through which it protruded.
Surgical repair of an opening in the wall of a body or cavity.
An operation in which a hernia (a protrusion of soft tissue through other tissue, usually muscle, that normally contains it) is surgically corrected. It is the typical treatment for most hernias. In a herniorrhaphy, a small incision is made in the skin over the hernia. Through this opening, the surgeon pushes tissue back into its proper location and sews loose muscles together. In some cases, a plastic mesh or sheet is inserted to reinforce a weak muscle or one that has been replaced by scar tissue.
