Harada’s syndrome

In the Far East, particularly in Japan, there is a combination of specific eye and brain disorders that primarily affects young adults.

Harada’s syndrome is characterized by a combination of eye issues affecting both eyes. These problems include severe inflammation of the iris, ciliary body, or choroid, as well as fluid buildup (oedema) in the retina and retinal detachment. Alongside these eye problems, individuals with Harada’s syndrome also experience meningoencephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain tissue and its surrounding membranes. Additionally, the syndrome may lead to other conditions such as deafness, hair loss (alopecia), and patchy loss of pigmentation in the skin, eyes, and hair ends.
