Grief

Normal, appropriate emotional response to an external and a consciously recognized loss; it is usually time-limited and subsides gradually. To be distinguished from depression.


A powerful emotion. Symptoms may include emotional debilitation, interference with mental, emotional, and physiological functioning can be mild, severe, momentary, or prolonged. Its stages are characterized by numbness, depression, and recovery.


Pattern of responses, physical (faster heart and breathing rates, sweating, increased energy reserves, slowed or disturbed digestive processes) and emotional (typically proceeding from disbelief and denial to anger and guilt to final acceptance) to the loss of a loved one or separation from him/her.


The emotion that follows the loss of a loved person or thing. Symptoms may include fatigue, depressed mood, insomnia, anorexia, feelings of regret, or a variety of physical discomforts.


Grief is a distressing emotion, often triggered by the loss of a loved one.
