A genus of dinoflagellate that causes certain shellfish that eat them to become toxic. It is also one of the causes of “red tide” when present in massive numbers in the ocean. This condition has occurred on certain beaches of North America. Shellfish present in such water contain the toxin present in the dinoflagellate.
