Metallic element; gold salts are sometimes used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and radioactive gold isotopes are used to treat some forms of cancer.

Any of several compounds of the metal gold, used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is administered by injection. Common side-effects include mouth ulcers, itching, blood disorders, skin reactions, and inflammation of the colon and kidneys.

A yellow metallic element; atomic weight 196.967; atomic number 79; specific gravity 19.32. Its salts have been used to treat early rheumatoid arthritis not adequately controlled by other anti-inflammatory agents or conservative therapy. Injection of radioactive gold, 198Au, is used to treat certain types of cancer and to help outline certain organs, as in liver scanning.

Gold is a valuable metal. Some gold-containing compounds are utilized in the treatment of severe rheumatoid arthritis and, in certain instances, arthritis that develops as a complication of psoriasis.

Gold is employed in the form of sodium aurothiomalate, administered through intramuscular injections or taken orally. However, a common side effect of gold treatment is dermatitis, which is inflammation of the skin. Gold therapy can potentially lead to harm to the kidneys, liver, and bone marrow, and it may also cause loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea.
