Glutamic acid decarboxylase

An enzyme (molecular mass 65 kD) found in the brain and the islet cells of the pancreas. It participates in the synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) — the main inhibitory neurotransmitter. Antibodies to GAD are found in the blood of patients with diabetes mellitus, type 1, stiff-person syndrome, and several other disorders.
