Glossitis refers to inflammation of the tongue, causing it to feel tender and swollen. The tongue appears red and smooth, and the surrounding areas of the mouth may also exhibit inflammation.

Glossitis can occur in different forms of anemia and in cases of vitamin B deficiency. Other triggers can include mouth infections (particularly those caused by the herpes simplex virus), irritation from dentures, and excessive consumption of alcohol, tobacco, or spicy foods.

The treatment is targeted at the root cause of the condition. Rinsing the mouth with a salt solution and maintaining good oral hygiene may assist in alleviating the discomfort.
