General practice

A medical practice where doctors offer first-line medical care for all types of illness to people who live locally, refer them to hospital if necessary and encourage health promotion.

This term is used in the UK to refer to the delivery of personal medical care outside a hospital environment. Doctors who offer this service are known as general practitioners (GPs). Nowadays, this type of healthcare is more commonly referred to as primary care.
