A drug used to treat or prevent infections caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV). Ganciclovir (Cytovene, Vitrasert) is used to treat CMV infections associated with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and to prevent GMV infections in people who have had organ transplants, It works by interfering in DNA replication by the virus and is given by injection.

A drug used in the treatment of life- or sight-threatening infection with cytomegalovirus in patients whose immune systems are compromised. Administered by intravenous transfusion, it is also used for the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection in patients who have had a liver transplant.

An antiviral medication is employed to combat severe cytomegalovirus infections. This type of condition tends to affect individuals with weakened or suppressed immune systems. Such immunodeficiency may arise due to a variety of reasons such as having AIDS, undergoing immunosuppressive drug therapy, or having received an organ transplant.

Ganciclovir is a potent medication that can lead to various side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and inhibition of blood cell production within the bone marrow. Due to these potential adverse effects, it is administered only when the anticipated therapeutic advantages are deemed to surpass the possible risks.
