In California, varietal red wines are produced from the Gamay and Gamay Beaujolais grapes. The Gamay grape, which is also grown in France’s Beaujolais region, produces wines with a fruity and charming character. Meanwhile, the Gamay Beaujolais grape generates a less fruity wine than the French Beaujolais wine. Nowadays, it is recognized as a descendant of Pinot Noir and can be legally marketed under either name. Typically, lighter red wines are sold as Gamay Beaujolais, while heavier wines are marketed as Pinot Noir.
