Galactose tolerance test

A test of the ability of the liver to metabolize galactose. A standard dose of galactose is administered to the fasting patient, and the amount of galactose excreted in the urine in the next 5 hr is determined. If the liver is damaged, the galactose is not metabolized to glycogen but is instead excreted in the urine.
