The region in the retina that is closely packed with cones.

Surface pit or small depression, especially the pit in the center of the macula lutea of the retina; when light rays from an object converge on the fovea, the sharpest visual image is obtained.

A small depression, especially the shallow pit in the retina at the back of the eye. It contains a large number of cones and is therefore the area of greatest acuity of vision: when the eye is directed at an object, the part of the image that is focused on the fovea is the part that is most accurately registered by the brain.
A small depression. In the eye this is an area near the fundus which contains predominantly cones, and is the area with greatest visual acuity.
A region close to the center of the retina boasting the greatest density of light-detecting cells. This area, known as the fovea, enables sharp and detailed vision.
