Fourth party

A term sometimes used in health care financing. The first two parties are the patient and the provider. The third party is a payer other than the patient, such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BC/BS), commercial insurance, or government. The term “fourth party” is sometimes used to designate industry or business, which buys health care for its employees, with or without the services of a third party.
