Forced expiratory volume

The maximum amount of air that can be expelled in a given time.


The volume of air that can be expired after a full inspiration. The expiration is done as quickly as possible and the volume measured at precise times; at ½, 1, 2, and 3 sec. This provides valuable information concerning the ability to expel air from the lungs.


The peak expiratory flow rate achieved by the individual within the initial second while performing the forced vital capacity (FVC) examination.


Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) refers to the highest volume of air that one can expel from the lungs forcibly, typically within a one-second duration. This test is commonly conducted alongside the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) test, as a combined diagnostic approach to evaluate various lung conditions. This method involves measuring the total amount of air expelled from the lungs within a specified timeframe.


A lower-than-normal outcome might signify the presence of diverse disorders such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or reduced lung volume, like that seen in conditions such as emphysema.
