False rib

One of the bottom five ribs on each side which are not directly attached to the breastbone.

The five lower costal bones on either side of the chest that do not attach directly to the sternum.

One of the lower ribs (8, 9, and 10) that do not join the sternum directly. Their cartilage connects to the cartilage of the seventh rib. The variation in the anatomy of the lower ribs may be considerable (i.e., there may be only two false ribs).

The five ribs on each side that don’t connect directly to the sternum. Their lack of direct attachment makes them slightly more fragile than the other ribs, making them more susceptible to injury when pressed.
