The production and release of excessive saliva into the mouth, which may cause a person to drool. Excessive salivation may occur more frequently during dental procedures known to stimulate the salivary glands that produce saliva. Dentists clear the mouth of saliva to examine and treat dental patients. The mouth must be dry for certain procedures to be performed and for the effective use of certain adhesives, fillings, and bonding materials.
An excessive production of saliva is known as hypersalivation. Occurrences of heightened salivation can be seen during pregnancy and in anticipation of vomiting. Other factors include oral issues like mouth lining irritation, gum inflammation (gingivitis), or mouth ulcers; gastrointestinal conditions such as peptic ulcers and oesophagitis; as well as nervous system disorders like Parkinson’s disease. In certain instances, hypersalivation might be alleviated using anticholinergic medications.
