Estriol

A test done on blood or urine to determine whether a pregnant woman’s placenta is functioning adequately.

An estrogen hormone usually obtained from the urine of pregnant women. Pregnant women may be tested for estriol levels as part of a triple screen test, which measures the levels of estriol, AFP, and human chorionic gonadotropin, another hormone. The results of these tests can assess the risk of Down syndrome in a fetus.

One of the female sex hormones produced by the ovary.

An estrogenic hormone considered to be the metabolic product of estrone and estradiol. It is found in the urine of women.

Estriol is a type of estrogen hormone and is the main estrogen produced during pregnancy. Synthetic estriol is prescribed to address symptoms and complications of menopause and to stimulate sexual development in cases of female hypogonadism, where the ovaries are underactive.
