A condition in which the fingers or toes, or even larger portions of the limbs, become purple and bloated in appearance, and very painful. In people suffering from the condition which is not a common one — the attacks come and go, being worse in summer (unlike chilblains), and worse on exertion or when the affected parts are warmed or allowed to hang down. The condition may appear without apparent cause, but is often associated with vascular diseases, such as hypertension and polycythaemia vera. It also occurs in association with certain diseases of the central nervous system, and in cases of metallic poisoning (e.g. arsenic, mercury and thallium). Treatment is unsatisfactory but aspirin provides symptomatic relief.
Episodic burning, throbbing, and redness of the extremities caused by local dilation of blood vessels. The affected areas (typically the feet or lower legs) become flushed and warm. This condition is a symptom of myeloproliferative diseases, such as polycythemia vera, and of neuritis, multiple sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. It may also occur as a drug reaction.
Erythromelalgia, commonly referred to as Gerhardt-Mitchell disease, is a rare condition primarily impacting the body’s extremities, particularly the feet. This disorder typically emerges during middle age and can be linked to other medical conditions like polycythemia (an increase in the total red blood cell count), thrombocytosis (an elevation in the number of platelets in the bloodstream), gout (a metabolic disorder leading to arthritis attacks), and neurological diseases.
Erythromelalgia is marked by intense episodes of burning pain and patchy redness on the skin, often triggered by exposure to heat. Elevating the affected limb and applying cold remedies like ice packs can help alleviate the attacks. Although there is no specific cure, aspirin might provide relief for some individuals experiencing this condition.
A skin condition marked by congestion and reddening of the skin on the hands or feet, often accompanied by intense neuralgic pain. It is also referred to as Weir-Mitchell’s disease.
