Dysequilibrium

Disordered balance.

Any abnormality in the sense of balance.

A type of dizziness. In dysequilibrium, a person experiences balance problems when walking or standing (and not when sitting or lying down). This condition most often affects older people and is usually associated with other medical problems, such as a prior stroke, Parkinson disease, peripheral neuropathies, severe arthritis of the knee or hip, or visual changes (for example, those following cataract surgery). Diagnosis is usually made through medical history and physical examination. Treatment of dysequilibrium involves correction or care of any underlying medical problems, if possible. Not all causes of disequilibrium are treatable. In such instances, physical therapy is often helpful for maintaining balance and muscle strength.
