Drinker respirator

A machine which encloses the whole of the body except the head, and in which air pressure is increased and decreased, so forcing the person to breathe in and out.

An obsolete apparatus in which alternating positive and negative air pressure on the patient’s thoracic area was used to produce artificial respiration by allowing the air in the otherwise immobile lung to be alternately filled with air and emptied. This device is commonly called an iron lung.
