Synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen used to treat problems of menopause and menstruation and to limit milk production in the breasts, as well as in the treatment of prostate cancer. It was formerly used in cases of threatened abortion but was found to be associated with a higher-than- normal incidence of vaginal cancer (and other cancers of the reproductive tract) in the daughters of women so treated during pregnancy.
