A paraprofessional or subprofessional health-care worker who is allowed by laws or other regulations to provide a limited amount of treatment to a patient, usually under the supervision or direction of an independent practitioner, such as a physician. An example of a dependent practitioner would be an occupational therapist or dental hygienist.
